Biography

Associate Professor Martin Stiles is an Electrophysiologist based in Waikato, New Zealand. He is the Director of Electrophysiology at Waikato Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Waikato Clinical School, University of Auckland.

A/Prof Martin Stiles is passionate about providing high quality, evidence-based care for heart rhythm disorders and promoting equity in health outcomes for New Zealanders. Martin has a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmia disorders, including inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndromes.

A/Prof Stiles holds fellowships with the Heart Rhythm Society, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. In 2009, He completed his PhD on the “Characterisation of the Substrate of Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter” from the University of Adelaide. A/Prof Stiles was also the winner of the Kudos award (Medical Scientist) in 2012 at the Hamilton Science Excellence Awards.

Martin is a keen researcher and has been involved in a plethora of research from bench side experiments to clinical trials. His core research areas include optimising ablation strategies, ICD programming and the investigation of sudden cardiac arrest.

As well as being the Director of Electrophysiology at Waikato Hospital, Martin also consults at Waikato Heart. Associate Professor Martin Stiles has greatly contributed his knowledge and experience through many publications and presentations globally. He was a principal investigator for the REVERSE-AD Dabigatran Reversal Agent multi-centre trial in 2014. He Co-Chaired the International Expert Consensus document for ICD programming in 2015 and is Chairing a similar document on the Investigation of Sudden Cardiac Arrest scheduled for publication in 2020. Martin was part of the expansion of the S-ICD program into Asia as the proctor for the first implantation of this breakthrough defibrillation therapy.
